IND vs AUS: R Ashwin should play first ODI over Washington Sundar, says Piyush Chawla

Ravichandran Ashwin should get a nod in the playing XI ahead of Washington Sundar in the first ODI if he has been specially called up for the series against Australia, feels Piyush Chawla. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo ahead of the first match in Mohali, Chawla said that Ashwin had better prowess with the ball in hand and should be given the go ahead for the first ODI match that is scheduled to be played on Friday, 22 September.

The 3-match Australia series is set to be India’s final assignment going into the ODI World Cup 2023, where they will start their campaign against Australia on October 8 in Chennai. India are going to be the favourites to win the ODI World Cup 2023 given the home conditions.

India vs Australia, 1st ODI: Preview

“We have batting till No. 8 in the Indian team. If 8 batters cannot get the job done, you cannot expect No. 9 to come and do the job for you. So, I’ll look at from the bowling perspective. Ashwin has hardly played 2 ODIs in the last year and it is going to be really important to see how they (Ashwin and Washington) come and bowl in this series. If he (Ashwin) bowls really well, they will go with him in the World Cup,” Chawla said on ESPNcricinfo.

Chawla further added that from a bowling perspective, Ashwin was much better than Washington Sundar but the only concern that remained around him was fitness for a 50-over game. Chawla also spoke on the Indian pace bowling contingent and said that none of the Indian pacers will play all three games in the series.

“I feel all of the Indian pacers will play two-two games each. They will be given enough game time but will be given rest as well,” Chawla said.

India will play their first ODI game against Australia in Mohali on Friday, 22 September. The other two ODIs will be played in Indore and Rajkot.
